The comic book domain has received a great deal of attention in recent years as superhero movies dominate popular culture, and both graphic novels and manga continue to find their way to library shelves and special collections. This poster describes progress on the Comic Book Ontology (CBO), a metadata vocabulary in development for the description of comic books and comic book collections. It presents a diagram of the model and outlines the methodology and rationale for producing a core application profile composed of a subset of elements from the vocabulary, which represent the minimal commitment necessary to make a unique statement about a resource. Additionally, it illustrates how that core application profile is used to generate XML/RDF records from user data contained in spreadsheets, a popular method of cataloging personal comic book collections.
