Metadata and Ubiquitous Access to Culture, Science and Digital Humanities

ABSTRACT: The need for structured metadata to support ubiquitous access across the Web to the treasure troves of resources spanning cultures, in science, and in the digital humanities is now common knowledge among information systems designers and implementers. Structured metadata expressed through languages of description make it possible for us to 'speak' about the contents of our treasure troves. But, like all human languages, our languages of description both enable and isolate. The push to break out of the isolation of the metadata silos in which professionals inevitably design, implement and manage metadata in order to discover the intersections of our treasure troves drives much of today's discourse and emerging practice in metadata. The emergence of massively integrated Web presences such as Europeana and the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) along with the reshaping of public access globally through mechanisms such as Linked Data and schema.org drive our conversations, our excitement, and our fears.
Every year the DCMI community gathers for both its Annual Meeting and its International Conference on Dublin Core & Metadata Applications. The work agenda of the DCMI community is broad and inclusive of all aspects of innovation in metadata design, implementation and best practices. While the work of the Initiative progresses throughout the year, the Annual Meeting & Conference provides the opportunity for DCMI "citizens" as well as newcomers, students, apprentices, and early career professionals to gather face-to-face to share experiences. In addition, the gathering provides public- and private-sector initiatives beyond DCMI that are doing significant metadata work to come together to compare notes and cast a broader light into their particular metadata work silos. Through such a gathering of the metadata communities, DCMI advances its "first goal" of promoting metadata interoperability and harmonization. This year, the Annual Meeting & Conference is being hosted by the « Universidade Estadual Paulista—São Paulo State University » and held in São Paulo, Brazil.
Exciting sessions are in planning for both the Annual Meeting and the Conference.

Submissions
- Unless previously arranged, accepted papers, project reports and posters must be presented in São Paulo by at least one of their authors.
- All submissions for papers, reports, extended poster abstracts, community workshops, special session and tutorials must do so through the DCMI Peer Review System (see the "Step one of the submission process" link above).
- Author registration with the peer review system and instructions for the submission process appear under the "Information for Authors".
- All paper, report, and extended poster abstract submissions will be peer-reviewed by the International Program Committee.
- All submissions must be in English. Public presentations may be either in English or in Portuguese.
Publication
- Accepted papers, project reports and poster abstracts will be published in the official Conference Proceedings at «http://dcpapers.dublincore.org/» within 1 month of the close of the conference. The full proceedings will also be published here on the conference website the first day of the conference.
- Special session and community workshop session abstracts will be published and made permanently available in the online conference program only.
- Papers, research reports and poster abstracts must conform to the appropriate formatting template available through the DCMI Peer Review System.
- Submitting authors in all categories must provide basic information regarding current professional positions and affiliations in the submission metadata as a condition of acceptance and publication.

PEER-REVIEWED PROJECT REPORTS (8-10 pages; Peer-reviewed)

- Conciseness and completeness of technical description
- Usability of the technical description by other potential implementers
- Clarity of presentation
PEER-REVIEWED POSTERS (1-2 pages; Peer-reviewed)
« Track Policies »Posters are for the presentation of projects or research under development or late-breaking results. Poster submissions should consist of a one-two page extended abstract. Posters will be assessed using the following criteria:
- Concise statement of research or project goals and milestones
- Significance of the research or project
- Framing of key barriers and future research
- Statement of results and accomplishments
- Clarity of presentation

BEST PRACTICE POSTERS & DEMONSTRATIONS (1-2 pages; Not peer-reviewed)

DCMI is committed to advancing metadata practice in the field. Best Practice Posters & Demonstrations is a non-peer reviewed track that encourages metadata practitioners in memory institutions, galleries, government and the private sector to showcase work demonstrating innovative approaches to metadata best practices.
SPECIAL & PANEL SESSIONS (1-2 pages; Not peer-reviewed)

Special and panel sessions are organized by experts in a specific area of metadata. Each special session serves as a focused exchange of the latest research and/or best practice in the area. A proposal for a special session consists of a single document of approximately 800-1,200 words in length containing:
- Session title
- 35-50 word abstract for use in promoting the session
- Brief description of the scope and motivation for the session
- Names and brief CVs of session facilitators, presenters, or panelists
- Brief CVs of the organizers (if different from #4 above)
TUTORIALS (1-2 pages; Not peer-reviewed)

Tutorials must be on a single topic, addressed at either an introductory level or an in-depth, expert level and are intended to impart knowledge or skills and address identified learning outcomes. Submissions for tutorials should include a brief abstract and an outline of the content, the duration (half-day 3 hours or full-day 6 hours), a description of the intended audience and expected professional level of expertise in the subject matter (e.g., novice, apprentice, expert) and a listing of the specific learning outcomes (i.e., competencies to be achieved), and a short biography of the presenter(s).
Selection of tutorials are be made by the Conference Committee based on the potential interest anticipated attendees to the conference.
WORKSHOPS (1-2 pages ; Not peer-reviewed)

Workshops engage participants in active work to address one or more well-defined problems or issues. Most frequently, workshops include both working in small- to medium-sized groups on either aspects of the subject matter to be addressed or on the subject matter as a whole and the sharing of outcomes, conclusions drawn, and (sometimes) definition of future work.
Submissions for workshops should include a brief abstract and an outline of the content, the duration (half-day 3 hours or full-day 6 hours), a description of the intended audience and expected professional level of expertise in the subject matter (e.g., novice, apprentice, expert).
Selection of workshops are made by the Conference Committee based on the potential interest anticipated attendees to the conference.

Author Guidelines
Full papers, project reports and poster abstracts are accepted for publication in the DC-2015 Conference Proceedings. Submissions for review may be submitted using Open Office (.odf), Microsoft Word (.doc) or Rich Text Format (.rtf).
In order to guarantee readability and uniformity of appearance, authors are expected to use the specifications in in the table below in formatting their submissions. An MS DOC template is available as well as a PDF illustrating the specifications:
Reference to the « published proceedings for DC-2014 » may be of further assistance with matters of document formatting.

DCMI adheres to a blind peer review process in which reviewer identities are unknown to authors. It does not use a double-blind review process; therefore, author identities are known to reviewers.
